Susan – I wish I could deliver some of my cake to your relatives who loved it so much! We won’t eat all of it – and I can’t give it away! Sadly, most of it will probably be trashed! :-(
A little labor-intensive, but with a good pay-off. I really needed to restrict myself to one piece… it’s just so decadent. Loved the vanilla buttercream!
I made the cakes, but they were an unmitigated disaster and I was too tired to follow through with the frosting and the ganache. I really want to get back into Baked Sunday Mornings, so I’ll try again later this month!
It was tasty. But the buttercream didn’t work out fantastic. Not sure about getting the temp up to 240 without the syrup turning a caramel colour. (definitely need more practice with buttercream)
Loved it! I forgot how much more I like making Italian meringue buttercream than Swiss meringue – going to stick with this frosting recipe in the future!
I have TWO family birthdays to celebrate this weekend–so I took the easy(ish) way out and converted the cake into cupcakes (it’s cool, they’e filled with ganache). They’re still tasty, and so much more portable!
I was happy with my cake, despite all the procrastinating I did to get it finished! Very very delicious. I would definitely make it again for a special occasion.
Went rogue with the Baked Classic Apple Pie… No “serving” photo up of it yet, but I’ll edit it later if anyone wants to check back. Kinda ‘Merica, if you will… ;)
Sitting this one out….don’t need a mile high chocolate cake sitting in my kitchen all week!!! Just do not have anyone to eat it and I certainly don’t want to be the one that eats the majority of it….not good! Everyone’s cake looks amazing and the pie looks yummy too, Sarah! Have a great holiday!
Sadly, I am nowhere near done with my blog post, but I have to leave for my BBQ. I am posting as-is, but I’ll have to finish it tonight. Please check back later! :)
I really need to invest in a cake slicer. Wonderful, but, alas, only 3 layers. May I just say, the Vanilla Buttercream is to die for?!?

I love this chocolate cake, even though I think I’m an outlier in not loving the vanilla buttercream.

I’m posting on behalf of Erin for now: http://starryeyedbaker.blogspot.com/2013/08/mile-high-chocolate-cake-with-vanilla.html.
Unfortunately, my cakes fell apart, so I have to re-bake in the morning, which means I won’t be able to post until late afternoon. :(
Or just take some of mine! We have half a cake left after brunch yesterday.
Likewise! I have about 3/4 of a cake here that will probably get thrown out!

I’ll be posting later in the day, too! :)
we enjoyed it!

I’m with Ali – Italian buttercream is my favorite, and I did my own thing with decorating (my cake was too shy to be partially naked).
